The last time eager “Game of Thrones” fans visited Westeros, they were left feeling as destroyed as King’s Landing.

The weak ending to the series undid so much good work the previous ones had put in. GoT was always a slow-building political thriller, with exquisite moments of action enhanced by the previous episodes building the tension. Who can forget the slaughter at the Red Wedding or the sheer delight as Joffrey Baratheon dropped dead at his coronation?

Sadly, the show’s final moments spoiled that, with a series’ worth of developments squeezed into two rushed episodes. It’s been three years since that botched finale, and finally, fans of the series are getting the spin-off they deserve, namely “House of Dragon.”

GoT spin-offs were always going to happen; the series caught the world’s attention, and people simply couldn’t get enough of the characters and their quest for power. There was talk of a film that hasn’t been confirmed, leaving fans turning to digital media for their fill. Telltale Games released an episodic graphic adventure, Game of Thrones, which put you on the Iron Throne, and it wasn’t the only game you could play around the series. The online slots from Ladbrokes feature Game of Thrones 243 Ways and Game of Thrones Megaways, which use the imagery from the show liberally. There’s even a conquest game, Game of Thrones: Conquest, which further brings Westeros to your mobile device.

Carving your own story is one way of imbuing yourself in the Seven Kingdoms, but by the end of the year, there will be an altogether better way; House of Dragon. Finally, filming has concluded on the spin-off series, and all that remains Is editing, adding in the effects, and preparing something that hopefully gives fans something to smile about.

Matt Smith (Doctor Who, The Crown) stars as Daemon Targaryen in the series, set 200 years before the events of the original series. Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill, The King’s Man), Paddy Considine (Peaky Blinders, Dead Man’s Shoes), Emma D’Arcy (Hannah, Truth Seekers), and Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel, Vanity Fair) also star. It’s a stellar cast with a lot to live up to. Fiction Horizon reveals the original series had an average viewership of 44.2m worldwide, and it helped launch the careers of Emilia Clarke, Kit Harrington, and Richard Madden, amongst others.

2022 is certainly the year we will see House of Dragon, as George R R Martin recently confirmed in his blog post. He’s said a new book will be released this year to coincide with the release of House of Dragon, meaning fans don’t have to wait much longer at all. That book is due for a July 12 release; could this be a possible date, or close to it, for the series?

Previously, head of HBO Casey Bloys explained how the series had been delayed due to the pandemic and that they’d failed to set a specific date to avoid upsetting fans if it got moved back. Perhaps even now, with just months before it hits our screens, they’re still holding off on a specific date, just in case? After all, one big upset, the GoT finale, was enough for HBO!
