NCIS: New Orleans” season 5 episode two follows a harrowing season premiere in “See You Soon.” “Inside Out” picks up weeks after NCIS Special Agent Dwayne Pride (Scott Bakula) suffers a near-death experience after Amelia Parsons (Ellen Hollman) shoots pride leaving him for dead. A box is unloaded onto a truck by a group of armed men, which is then stolen by a hit squad. Inside the crate is Terrance Desmond, a former IRA bomb-maker.
The dead men are Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) agents conducting covert operations in the Big Easy. Though Pride is officially on leave, he returns to help his team get answers. “To be honest Dwayne, I wasn’t expecting to hear from you for quite some time. I didn’t know you were back at work,” FBI Det. Sanchez (Carlos Gomez) comments. Pride explains, “I’m not, just pinch hitting.” It turns out the Special Agent in Charge (SAC) in the southeast field office has retired. Director Vance selected Dwayne Pride as the new SAC.

“Well if Pride leaves, what happens to NCIS New Orleans?” Special Agent Chris LaSalle (Lucas Black) wonders. The answer comes in the form of Special Agent Hannah Khoury (Necar Zadegan). Khoury sashays into the NCIS NOLA field office, answers a ringing telephone, and immediately begins giving orders. “Sebastian, right?” she directs to Agent Sebastian Lund (Rob Kerkovich). “You have impeccable timing. NOPD needs everything we’ve got on Terrance Desmond, do you mind sending those files over?” Without question, Lund accepts. “Who is she?” Special Agent Tammy Gregorio (Vanessa Ferlito) questions Sebastian. “I don’t know,” he replies. “Why are you taking orders from her?” Gregorio continues. “I don’t know,” Sebastian repeats. “Who the hell are you?” Tammy asks Khoury. “She’s your new boss,” Pride reveals.

It turns out the DIA agents are helping the CIA move detainees. The team ends up tracking down the mercenaries along with Terrance Desmond. Unfortunately, they find Desmond already dead, though the team manages to capture Smith (Tim Griffin). Initially, it seems Smith is hired to help with little knowledge, but there’s an explosive twist.

Observations:

“See You Soon,” Dwayne Pride returns to work unofficially at least, despite the protestations of his daughter Laurel (Shanley Caswell). It’s refreshing to see Laurel benefit from additional screen time, as she’s a character which brings out a different side in the normally stoic Pride. Their dynamic lends a fresh quality as it presents Dwayne in a situation other than NCIS New Orleans field work.

It’s clear that Khoury is poised to disrupt the NCIS NOLA office. At the episode’s onset, Gregorio resists Hannah, while the finale finds Khoury, Lund, LaSalle, Patton Plame aka Triple P (Daryl “Chill” Mitchell) and Gergorio enjoying a toast. “You gotta worry about this woman,” Triple P warns of Khoury. “I’ve seen her kick some commando ass.” I enjoy the new Khoury character, as she seems genuine, focused, and a solid fit for the NCIS NOLA team. During the toast, Special Agent Khoury offers “Be salamati,” or “to your health” in Farsi. It’s refreshing to see additional diversity on the team.

It’s clear that Pride’s replacement in Special Agent Khoury is competent, driven, but also respectful. “I only considered the position after hearing that you would be the new regional SAC,” she explains. The real question which lingers is whether Pride will leave the NCIS New Orleans team. After seeing Khoury’s acceptance by Patton, LaSalle, Lund, and Gergorio, as well as his near-death experience, Pride has all the more reason to opt for a role as SAC. But his heart is clearly with his devoted team. Look for this to be prominent subplot as the season progresses. Overall, “NCIS: New Orleans” “Inside Out,” is an excellent standalone plot with intriguing story arc peppered throughout.
