A prisoner, Etta Brinks (Caroline Pluta) is broken out of jail by a man impersonating the late NCIS New Orleans agent Chris LaSalle (Lucas Black). When the penitentiary discovers that LaSalle is deceased, it’s too late. Brinks has escaped. Special Agents Hannah Khoury (Necar Zadegan) and Dwayne “King” Pride (Scott Bakula) inform their team, Special Agents Tammy Gregorio (Vanessa Ferlito), Sebastian Lund (Rob Kerkovich), and Quentin Carter (Charles Michael Davis) of the situation. Brinks, a lifelong grifter, often moved, creating new identities. And Etta apparently enjoyed separating people from their money. As Sebastian informs the team, Etta’s sister Kristen recently passed away under mysterious circumstances.
A photo of Kristen with Naval Vice Admiral Hicks seems odd. Days after the photo was taken, Hicks resigned and Kristen was murdered execution-style. This leads the NCIS NOLA outfit to speculate that Hicks could have had an affair with Kristen, then murder her to cover his tracks. Since Carter knows Admiral Hicks through his father, Pride sends Quentin to go visit the Vice Admiral. “Take Sebastian,” he commands. “I don’t need him,” Carter argues. “Dude I’m like, right here,” Sebastian informs Carter. After a chat with Hicks, Sebastian and Carter discover that Hicks was working construction on a project near Belle Chasse. Kristen pressured Hicks to give up information such as possible bidders, but the Admiral refused to give any insight. The investigation leads the team to Jack Harden, a consultant that may have been searching for insider information on the construction project.
Pride’s daughter, Laurel (Shanley Caswell) shows up from New York City. Laurel explains that she’s been having relationship issues with her boyfriend, a cop in NYC. Despite Laurel’s protestations that she simply wants some father-daughter time, Dwayne can’t seem to stay in Dad-mode, and continually slips into cop-mode. Yet, it’s not only the Pride family struggling with relationships. Hannah Khoury’s ex-husband Ryan Porter (Hal Ozsan) informs her that he’s met another woman, it’s serious, and he wants to introduce Hannah to his new squeeze.
Observations:
As “NCIS NOLA” does well so often, relationships drive the plot. Working on Etta case, Pride and team get to the bottom of the conspiracy fairly fast through collaboration. Once again, Agent Carter creates an unusual dynamic. He’s a flashy hotshot, unused to teamwork. But that’s poised to change, and already Quentin has begun opening up to his NICS New Orleans squadmates.
The relationship subplots are enjoyable enough. Laurel shows up and, despite the pretense of spending more time with dear ol’ dad, it’s fairly obvious that something’s amiss. There are a few twists throughout which ultimately set up a pretty major reveal at the end of the episode. Likewise, Khoury grapples with seeing Ryan move on. While she doesn’t want to be married to Porter, Hannah also isn’t keen on him bringing another woman into their daughter Naomi’s (Venus Ariel) life. Entertaining, witty, and character-driven, “Pride & Prejudice” is a superb “NCIS: New Orleans” romp.
