“The X-Files” debuted in 1993, and what started as a show about a fringe FBI agent and his skeptical partner transformed into a nine season series. During its impressive run, “The X-Files” amassed a cult following, and the franchise spawned two films and two spinoff series. Tapping into 90’s paranoia, fans have awaited another Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) pairing. Well, they may be in luck. Fox revealed this week they too would like to bring back “The X-Files,” preferably with Duchovny and Anderson reprising their leading roles, and series creator Chris Carter at the helm.
Prior to Fox’s announcement, many fans assumed another X-Files movie may be in the works. The first film, “Fight the Future,” fell between seasons five and six. “Fight the Future” continued a pre-existing storyarc, and benefited from the already established lore. Overall, it felt like a heavily condensed season. 2008’s follow up, “I Want to Believe,” came in a stand-alone “monster-of-the-week” format, and was critically panned. An X-Files reboot as a season rather than a film could avoid the pitfalls of “I Want to Believe,” allowing the series to once again establish intricate storylines.
However, X-Philes wouldn’t be X-Philes without adopting a healthy skepticism like their hero Fox Mulder. Despite the buzz Fox has generated, the epic sci-fi series set a lofty standard few shows have been able to meet. After such a lapse in time, it’s unclear if an X-Files revival would pick up from where season nine left off or initiate new lore. Additionally, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson have kept pretty busy lately, allowing us to get our fix. Anderson is starring in the BBC’s “The Fall,” currently available on Netflix. In 2014, Duchovny wrapped up the “Californication,” which aired on Showtime for seven seasons. NBC will debut a new series, “Aquarius” later in 2015 which stars Duchovny as a police sergeant in 1960’s LA. With full schedules, it’s questionable when the actors would be available for filming.
If Chris Carter once again teams up with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, an X-Files reboot could actually take off. Do want to believe “The X-Files” can be resurrected, or would you rather see this project abducted? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section or hit us up on Twitter!
