The 89th Academy Awards Nominees Revealed

The 89th Academy Awards nominees have been revealed. Not surprisingly, the 2017 Oscar nominations feature a bevy of recognizable films from blockbusters to arthouse titles. Musical “La La Land” landed several nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Cinematography. Similarly “Moonlight,” one of my top 11 films of 2016 scored nominations for Best Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali), Best Cinematography (James Laxton), and Best Supporting Actress (Naoime Harris).

Among my top 11 films from 2016 picks, “Arrival,” “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” “Rogue One,” and “Doctor Strange” each received nominations. Notably, TV miniseries “O.J.: Made in America” received a nomination for Best Documentary Feature. As television series with high production value continue to debut, the demarcation between films and TV blurs. Writer Craig D. Lindsay has an excellent piece evaluating when a movie is a movie.

Conspicuously absent among the 2017 Oscar nominations are “Deadpool” and “The Neon Demon.” In an age prolific superhero flicks, “Deadpool” arrived as a fresh genre entry. “The Neon Demon,” while certainly not without its faults, remains masterfully shot. Plus, “The Neon Demon” boasts a phenomenal score. Nevertheless, both “Deadpool” and “The Neon Demon” failed to snag any Oscar nominations.
