Michael Stipe, R.E.M. frontman and renowned artist, once again graces Moogfest with a multimedia installation. Moogfest 2017 saw Stipe host an installation, and for 2018, he returns with the debut of an exclusive exhibition, Thibault Dance.

“Thibault Dance is an enveloping turn on my work in video,” Stipe describes. “The material comes from the juxtaposition and friction of raw elements of physicality, performed to a reimagined musical score that heightens tension to create a portrait where awkwardness and grace coexist, shifting through vulnerability, discovery, and pure dance.” — Michael Stipe

The installation will reside in the historic Snow Building in Downtown Durham.

Moogfest 2018 Programming Updates

In addition to Michael Stipe returning to Moog for a multimedia installation, the festival adds a slew of new musical talent to its robust roster. Stephen O’Malley, drone music composer and Sunn O))) co-founder returns to Moog. Sunn O))) headlined at Moogfest 2016. O’Malley is slated to collaborate with pop experimentalist Angel Deradoorian with a four-hour performance on Saturday, May 19 2018. R&B futurist Mhysa and post-jungle beatmaker NO EYES join the lineup for Moogfest 2018.

Though many acts hail from around the country and world, there’s certainly a local presence as well. Durham’s own sister, brother are a noise-punk duo set to perform on Thursday, Moogest 2018’s opening day. Look out for a Thursday, May daytime talk from Herb Dutch, a highly-respected music educator that collaborated with Bob Moog on the creation of the Moog synthesizer.

Reverb Record Fair

Although music, talks, and workshops might be the most prominent features of Moogfest, as per usual there’s a record fair. Moogfest 2018 sees a Reverb LP Record Fair, and will feature albums from the likes of All Day Records in Carrboro, and Carolina Soul. Director of Business Development at Reverb.com Jim Tuerk revealed “We love record stores like we love music instrument stores — they are important community hubs that support not only music creation, but also our ability to share and appreciate music and the people who create it.”

The Reverb Record Fair will be open to the public, not just Moogfest attendees, and runs 10 AM to 6 PM.
