It’s September; the school year’s here, and the semester is chugging along. With school comes the inevitable procrastination, so you’re probably going to go into the bookstore stacks to pick up a few good reads. While you’re there, why not look at some manga that’s recently come out? Here are our top picks for manga that came out in September 2018!
The critically acclaimed My Brother’s Husband is back with a second volume, and it remains as important as ever. It continues Yachi’s journey of self-discovery through tolerance, as the more he interacts with Mike, the more he comes to understand his late brother and how the being gay isn’t as foreign as he thinks it is. A touching look at gay culture in Japan and how one man comes to unravel his more traditional beliefs with love and family coming together.
Another returning title is The Ancient Magus’ Bride with volume nine coming out this month. The last few volumes have been on an emotional high, with misunderstandings and betrayals of trust taking the forefront. This time the climax is here as Chise heads off to face down Cartaphilus and hopefully end the spiral of madness that he brings with him.
In line with a lot of the comedic fantasies we’ve seen lately is a new title: Dragon Goes House-Hunting. We all know that dragons build their lairs to hoard treasure and keep to themselves, but this dragon is different. It turns out that this dragon wants more than just a house- he wants the perfect house, and that’s not easy to find. Even fantasy creatures have to sift through the troubles of finding the best home out there!
Another comedy comes in a more realistic and domestic format, with The Delinquent Housewife! Komugi’s a new wife settling into her marriage, and while she tries to seem like the perfect, ideal housewife, that isn’t all there is too her. In her past, she wasn’t the prim and proper girl she pretends to be, but was actually in a biker gang. Her need to keep that a secret from her husband leads to some hijinks for sure!
We all know and love Sailor Moon, especially if it was an integral part of our childhoods. The manga is back, this time larger and ever and with a new translation, in the first volume of the Eternal Edition. Personally, I’ve always seen the Japanese versions of these and marveled at the gorgeous covers and colored art, and now I can have one in English for myself!
Girl From The Other Side is still a masterpiece, with its heavy use of space and shading to create a gloomy but tender story. Volume five starts off with high tension, as the revelation that safety is both there and so far away, and how things fall into place as well. Quiet but emotionally compelling, I can’t wait to see what this new volume will bring to the countryside of silent terror.
Radiant is a new series, this time penned not by a Japanese mangaka, but a French one. Don’t let that discourage you, because this is absolutely in the vein of classic shonen, from flashy fights to However, it’s picked up significantly over the years, and is even set to be an anime come the fall season! Before the anime drops, why not pick a volume up for yourself to see how it is?
Another series coming off an anime is Hinamatsuri, and the first volume of that drops this month. This features an unlikely duo: an upcoming yakuza, and a mysterious girl with telepathy. What a concept! If you enjoyed the anime, then be sure to pick up the manga, and if you haven’t given it a watch yet, then this is the perfect gateway to a wild but touching world.
Those were our top picks for the month! If you have any suggestions, or picked up any of these, let us know what you think!
