CBC hit series “Murdoch Mysteries” debuted in 2008. The show based on the Maureen Jennings novel series since gained massive popularity, and rightfully so. “Murdoch Mysteries” stars the titular detective, William Murdoch (Yannick Bisson) or the Toronto Constabulary. Det. Murdoch relies on his wit, innovative technology, and supporting members of the constabulary such as Constable George Crabtree (Jonny Harris) and Inspector Brackenreid (Thomas Craig). Most notably, William frequently enlists the partnership of his wife, former coroner and current surgeon Dr. Julia Ogden (Hélène Joy). With “Murdoch Mysteries” season 13 just around the corner, here’s a recap of what happened in season 12, and what to expect for the 13th season of “Murdoch Mysteries!”
“Murdoch Mysteries” Season 12 Recap
Season 12 of “Murdoch Mysteries” featured a slew of plots and subplots. Julia and Murdoch co-authored a book on investigative techniques, a prominent thread throughout season 12. “Sins of the Father” touched on Murdoch’s father, Harry Murdoch, revealing a dark family history. “Secrets and Lies” dropped a major twist that Inspector Brackenreid fathered a daughter in a previous relationship. During the epic two-part season finale “Darkness Before the Dawn,” John Brackenreid was framed for murder. Although ultimately acquitted of all charges, the young Constable Brackenreid (Charles Vandervaart) chooses to abandon the constabulary in favor of becoming an actor.
Miss Violet Hart (Shanice Banton) finally gains control of the coroner. George Crabtree, after an unfortunate string of romances, may have finally found an unlikely match in Effie Newsome (Clare McConnell) of the Mimico Newsomes. Aside from story arc episodes, “Murdoch Mysteries” season 12 boasted many of the series’ best standalone shows. Particularly, “Sir. Sir? Sir!!!” proved one of my favorite episodes not only of “Murdoch Mysteries,” but of any TV series to date.
“Murdoch Mysteries” Season 13 Preview
- Murdoch Mysteries season 13 premiere: September 16, 2019
- S13E01: “Troublemakers,” Sept. 16, 2019
- S13E02: “Bad Pennies,” Sept. 23, 2019
Looking ahead to “Murdoch Mysteries” season 13, expect Det. Murdoch to keep a watchful eye on the newly appointed Chief Coroner, Miss Hart. William doesn’t trust the conniving coroner, and for good reason. The 13th season of “Murdoch Mysteries” is poised to air the 200th episode which, presumably, will be honored by a milestone somehow. Perhaps this manifests in a connection to past plot or character, flashbacks to previous cases, or an entirely different take. Regardless, expect “Murdoch Mysteries” 200th episode to be graced with the respect it deserves.
Dr. Ogden struggled in her post as a surgeon. Season 13 should continue to focus on Julia’s medical career. Though Yannick Bisson is largely associated with wearing the instantly-recognizable Murdoch hat, Bisson takes a turn in the director’s chair for season 13. Patrick McKenna is slated to reprise his role as Hamis Slorach, Station House No. 5 detective previously seen in a handful of episodes including “Manual for Murder.” Brackenreid’s daughter returns as well. Plus, Det. Llewellyn Watts (Daniel Maslany) played a crucial role in the 12th season, especially the finale. As such, he’ll likely return and with his familiar pensive quirkiness.
Most of all, “Murdoch Mysteries” season 13 promises to bring a delightful mix of comedy, drama, and intrigue. As a whole, it’s phenomenally well-balanced, from one-off hilarity-filled romps such as “Sir. Sir? Sir!!!” to somber “Shadows are Falling” where Julia suffered a miscarriage, it’s a show which, even after 13 seasons, remains fresh and full of surprises. Running gags such as Murdoch inventing everything, notably fingerprints (or fingermarks), blood testing, and surveillance equipment, and George naming future inventions should continue as well.
While the full roster of episodes lined up for “Murdoch Mysteries” season 13 hasn’t yet been announced, we do know the first two titles. “Troublemakers” airs on Sept. 16, 2019 and fines Murdoch investigating an explosion at a suffrage rally. “Bad Pennies” follows on Sept. 23, 2019. “Murdoch Mysteries” season 13 kicks off on Monday, September 16, 2019, and I for one couldn’t be more excited.
