“Murdoch Mysteries” season 14 ended on a two-parter, and accordingly season 15 begins with a two-parter. Detective William Murdoch (Yannick Bisson) of the Toronto Constabulary is in Ontario with his son, Harry. Aided by fellow detective and childhood friend Freddie Pink (Alex Paxton-Beesley), Murdoch thwarts the Black Hand’s attempt at murdering Anna Fulford (Harry’s mother and Murdoch’s old flame). Murdoch manages to strike a deal with the Black Hand. First, William enlists mercenary Frank Rhodes’s (Brendan Murray) assistance in arresting Black Hand head Joe Falcone (Austin Di Iulio). Then, the artful detective double crosses Rhodes, although considering Frank’s murdering past, there’s little sympathy for his incarceration. Despite this, I’m not altogether unconvinced that the Black Hand won’t pose a threat in the future.
Freddie accompanies Anna and Harry to England, ensuring their safe passage. Before leaving Ontario, Constable Georges of the Ontario constabulary escorts Murdoch to the train station, offering thoughts on extraterrestrial life. Hopefully, Constables George and Georges meet one day as they apparently have a lot more in common than just a name.
Constable George Crabtree (Jonny Harris), now married to Amelia Ernst (Sarah Swire), explains his predicament to his traumatized girlfriend (who Crabtree would have proposed to had the Ernst sisters not intervened), Effie Newsome (Clare McConnell). “What’s done is done and George and Amelia are now man and wife,” Dorothy Ernst (also played by Sarah Swire) exclaims.
George suggests going out to introduce his new wife to the world. Amelia and George head out with Dorothy and Effie in tow. However, upon venturing to Station House No. 4, Dorothy recognizes Constable Henry Higgins (Lachlan Murdoch) as the priest (a twist that I correctly predicted). Dorothy escapes while Amelia is captured and arrested. However, Amelia dupes a guard and breaks out of jail. Chances are, we’ve not yet seen the last of the Ernst twins.
Meanwhile, Inspector Brackenreid (Thomas Craig) and Det. Llewellyn Watts (Daniel Maslany) investigate the murder of Jack Larkin (Morgan David Jones). Hakuri (Peter Shinkoda) and Yua Nakamura (Zoe Doyle) accused blamed Larkin for supposedly killing their daughter Minori (Miho Suzuki) so suspicion falls on Hakuri, Yua, and their son Keiji (Andrew Park).
Brackenreid decides to issue a statement to the newspapers that all three of the Nakamura’s are guilty as a ruse to draw out Minori who Brackenreid believes to still alive. Evidence suggests this is true when Toronto coroner Miss Violet Hart (Shanice Banton), with the assistance of Dr. Julia Ogden (Helene Joy), discovers that the buried bones Yua and Hakuri claim to be their daughter’s are really pig bones. As it turns out, Minori is actually alive, having killed Jack Larkin herself after enduring physical and psychological abuse. Brackenreid reports the murder but recommends leniancy.
After a risky procedure, Dr. Ogden loses a patient. Unfortunately, in the wake of a surgery that seemingly went well. Ogden laments the death of her patient but doesn’t appear too concerned for her job. Possibly there will be greater ramifications in the future though. After all, the patient was a wealthy and influential member of the Toronto community and a supporter of the hospital.
Miss Hart, who earlier handcuffed her husband Arthur Carmichael (James Graham) to a sofa, offers him a second change. Arthur accepts graciously, but it’s unclear how long, if at all, that will last. Brackenreid meets with a pair of former criminals, Farrow (Nicolas Van Burek) and Ball (Austin Strugnell). Farrow and Ball relay that they’ve found Bobby Brackenreid, the Inspector’s son now escaped from jail. Rather than follow after him, Thomas instead leaves him to fend for himself, paying Ball and Farrow their bounty for locating him.
“Murdoch Mysteries” season 15 episode 2 “The Things We do for Love, Part 2” successfully wraps up most story arcs from season 14’s “Everything is Broken” parts 1 and 2 as well as “The Things We do for Love, Part 1.” Bobby Brackenreid is still on the run, though chances are we’ll see Bobby again later on in season 15. Like part 1, part 2 feels a bit rushed with a few too many storylines all jostling for attention. Nevertheless, it sets up the Ernst sisters for a sinister return and leaves Bobby’s fate uncertain. Overall, it’s a satisfying wrap-up to “The Things We do for Love, Part 2.”
