“NCIS: New Orleans” season 5 episode 5 opens on a shrimp boat where a young boy plays a game and reluctantly helps his father. But when they raise the nets, more than just shrimp surfaces. The body of a Navy petty officer bobs up. “Might wanna brace yourself,” Special Agent Tammy Gregorio (Vanessa Ferlito) warns. “Not a point of pride Gregorio, but I’ve seen it all,” Special Agent Hannah Khoury (Necar Zadegan) replies. “Yeah well, I’ve seen ‘Jaws’ a million times, never gonna unsee this,” Agent Sebastian Lund (Rob Kerkovich) remarks.
The dead petty officer was supposed to take over his uncle’s fishing boat, but instead joined the Navy. This created tension between the two. As such, the uncle becomes a prime suspect. But tension between the Vietnamese fishing community in New Orleans and Triton Fisheries, a major fishing company operating in NOLA. Reportedly, the juggernaut of Triton Fisheries is poisoning seafood to run out mom and pop fishing businesses.

Meanwhile, Special Agent Chris LaSalle (Lucas Black) battles an IRS investigation into his late father’s estate. The tax fraud case puts LaSalle in a difficult position. Thankfully, the always caring Dwayne Pride (Scott Bakula) arrives to support LaSalle.

Observations:

“Legacy” offers a bit of closure to LaSalle’s tax fraud suit. The IRS investigation leads LaSalle and Pride to Leila Addison, a former accountant for LaSalle’s father. With her help, Christopher and Dwayne locate the money shuffled around by the late Beau LaSalle.

I enjoyed the dynamic between grassroots fisheries and massive businesses. The seafood industry is crucial to the New Orleans economy, and it further solidifies the feeling of place which “NCIS: New Orleans” continues to set. There’s a twist at the end of the episode both in terms of the killer, as well as the missing money from LaSalle Industries.

While “Diplomatic Immunity” was largely focused on Sebastian, “Legacy” concentrates on LaSalle. The titular legacy is two-fold: The legacy of Vietnamese fishing communities, as well as LaSalle Enterprises. Although Dwayne Pride is now the regional SAC, “NCIS: NOLA” maintains his presence on, and interaction with, his former field office team. Overall, it’s an enjoyable, engaging episode.
