Warning: Minor spoilers ahead

“NCIS: New Orleans” season 5 episode 17 “Reckoning” opens with NCIS Special Agent Dwayne Pride (Scott Bakula) performing surveillance on a security guard. Upon arriving to work, Pride discovers that he’s no longer the Special Agent in Charge (SAC). When asked where he’s reassigned to, Dwayne is unable to get an answer. Meanwhile, Special Agents Tammy Gregorio (Vanessa Ferlito) and Chris LaSalle (Lucas Black) travel to the seemingly sleepy small town of Bovis, Mississippi to investigate a missing Naval officer.ncis new orleans reckoningIn Bovis, LaSalle and Gregorio meet the Police Chief, Mayor, 9-11 operator, notary, and car dealer Charlie Conroy. Despite its sleepy charm, something in Bovis appears amiss. Bovis fell on hard times after its dog food factory closed down, but since it’s re-opening, the town experienced a strange boom. Amidst the economic poverty, the streets are filled with new cars. Plus, its citizens appear close-knit and conspiratorial.

While Pride flounders, searching for answers, Raymond Isler (Derek Webster) returns. As it turns out, Isler heads up a covert task force searching for Apollyon. “Heard you were looking for a job,” Isler greets Pride. Yet, Isler’s team operates in a guerrilla method which Pride opposes.

Observations:

It’s delightful seeing Isler back on “NCIS: New Orleans” during S05E17. “Reckoning” returns to the Apollyon subplot which permeated the earlier part of the season. Once again, Pride and Isler ooze a pleasantly dysfunctional relationship. While Isler refuses to yield information on his superiors, claiming that it’s a need to know basis, there could be a twist coming. Ultimately, Pride decides not to join Isler’s team. Instead, Dwayne stays to help his NCIS NOLA outfit. Hopefully, and presumably, “NCIS: New Orleans” pits Isler and Pride together before the end of the season.

The Bovis storyline remains enjoyable, though it takes a back seat to the Pride and Isler show. There’s a conspiratorial element similar to “The Stepford Wives” or “Village of the Damned.”  It’s a delightfully wacky narrative. Medical examiner Loretta Wade (CCH Pounder) sees a bit of field work, though master hacker Patton Plame (Daryl “Chill” Mitchell) is notably absent.

It turns out the dog food plant in Bovis manufacturers more than just kibble. Inside, Gregorio and LaSalle uncover a meth lab. Though the episode concludes with the drug lab shut down, a cartel involved is still at large. Possibly, the cartel will rear its ugly head before the season wraps up.

I’m excited for the Apollyon takedown which is poised to play out over the course of “NCIS: New Orleans” season 5. Though Pride didn’t join Isler’s task force, it’s likely Pride gets dragged into the mess, either willingly or unwittingly.
