NCIS: New Orleans” season 5 episode 22 “Trust Me” begins with a hit-and-run where a Navy doctor is murdered. “I hate a car wreck,” Special Agent Hannah Khoury (Necar Zadegan) reveals to medical examiner Loretta Wade (CCH Pounder). “Give me a good ‘ol murder scene any day.” Khoury, it turns out, was in a four-car pile up when her daughter was three. Dr. Wade explains that Commander Sandra Barnes (Monica Louwerens), doctor at the Naval Medical Clinic in Belle Chasse was killed instantly. Tulane student Natalie Layton (Allie Gonino) emerges alive, and is rushed to ICU. But the hit-and-run takes a deadly turn when Agent Sebastian Lund (Rob Kerkovich) discovers that while it’s a hit-and-run, it’s no accident.

Natalie’s step-father, Dylan Samuels (Jeremy Davidson) confides in Gergorio. However, Tammy has a hunch that Dylan is somehow involved. Despite protestations from her fellow agents including Special Agent Chris LaSalle (Lucas Black), Gregorio remains steadfast in her belief that the Dylan is involved.

Meanwhile, Hannah’s estranged husband, Ryan Porter (Hal Ozsan) returns with information on an Apollyon. Though Khoury wants Ryan left out of any Apollyon dealings, insisting he’s out of the game, Special Agent in Charge (SAC) Dwayne Pride’s (Scott Bakula) explains that Ryan came to him.

Observations:

Through “NCIS: New Orleans” season 5, episodes have increasingly centered on its various episodes such as Patton “Triple P” Plame’s (Daryl “Chill” Mitchell) during “In Plain Sight.” Now, it’s Gergorio’s turn. Major props to Vanessa Ferlito. It’s arguably Tammy who exhibits the greatest character development. Initially, her character was merely the tough new girl. Now, she’s a clever, resolute, capable agent, and a caring friend to all, but especially Sebastian. Because of Gregorio’s resolve, the NCIS NOLA team cracks the case, bringing down Dylan in S05E21. At one point, Tammy implores, “Trust me, if anyone knows a con man it’s me. I was married to one.”

As the season comes to a close, it’s obvious that Apollyon will rear its ugly head once again. I appreciated the balance of one-off plot, and story arc. Where previously in “NCIS: New Orleans” season 5 it seemed Ryan and Hannah may reunite, their continued disagreement over intersecting work and personal lives seems poised to keep them permanently at odds. Tammy really steals the show though, with Ferlito putting in a tour de force acting job.
