Go ahead and celebrate, X-Philes. The oft-rumored “X-Files” revival is official, as reported today by TheWrap. Fox has ordered a 6 episode season, with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reprising their roles as FBI agents Fox Mulder (Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Anderson). Also on board is series creator Chris Carter.
“The X-Files” debuted in 1993, enjoying an impressive nine season run before a 2002 finale. The franchise included two films, 1998’s “The X-Files: Fight the Future,” which bridged seasons five and six, and 2008’s “The X-Files: I Want to Believe.” A spinoff series “The Lone Gunmen,” emerged from the momentum of the X-Files universe. IDW Publishing continued “The X-Files” with a comic book series, The X-Files Season 10.
Production of Fox’s limited series will purportedly begin this summer, but Fox has yet to announce a specific air date. It’s been 13 years since the final season of “The X-Files,” and it’s unclear whether the new show will bring closure to existing lore, or follow a new storyarc.
Although Duchovny and Anderson haven’t investigated supernatural crime scenes together lately, each has notably remained busy. Anderson is currently starring in BBC’s “The Fall,” as Superintendent Stella Gibson, a police officer in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Duchovny meanwhile has assumed the role of police sergeant Sam Hodiak in NBC’s “Aquarius,” a series chronicling the investigation, and eventual arrest, of Charles Manson. “Aquarius” is slated for a May 28, 2015 debut. Additionally, both Anderson and Duchovny released novels in the past year.
Congratulations, X-Philes. You wanted to believe that a new “X-Files” series would arrive, and the truth has been revealed. The original series was a masterpiece, and admittedly difficult to best. Over the course of nine years, “The X-Files” snagged a Peabody Award, five Golden Globes, and 16 Emmys. The reunion of Chris Carter, David Duchovny, and Gillian Anderson should make for a superb addendum to franchise. Is an “X-Files” revival the incarnation of your dreams, or the monster of the week?
