Triangle area classic cinema guide: April 2018 edition

April surges into North Carolina with its typical indecisive Spring-Winter oscillations. While the weather exhibits its usual drastic swings, the veritable treasure trove of classic cinema hitting NC’s Triangle area remains a constant. In Durham, Carolina Theatre hosts its Retro Film Series on Friday evenings. Friday, April 13 sees “Real Genius” paired with “Roadhouse” back on the big screen. Tune in on April 20 for “The Gate” and “Demon’s.” Then, Stanley Kubrick classic “Paths of Glory” hits Carolina Theatre of Durham on April 27, with “Fail Safe” as its B-side.

Running April 27-May 3, 2018 check out the The Shaw Brothers: Volume One at Carolina Theatre. Featuring martial arts gems such as “The Duel,” “Buddha’s Palm,” “The Boxer’s Omen,” “Black Magic 2,” “Human Lanterns,” “36th Chamber of Shaolin,” “Five Deadly Venoms,” “Mighty Peking Man,” and “Crippled Avengers,” it’s sure to be a high-energy film fest, and certainly an incredible opportunity to see a smattering of beloved action flicks back at the box office.

Flashback Cinema screens loads of old school goodies on Sundays and Wednesdays. Check out the seasonally appropriate “Easter Parade,” on April 1 and April 4. Then, catch John Travolta in his breakout role with “Saturday Night Fever” on April 8 and 11. “Back to the Future” comes back to the big screen on April 15 and 18. Party on with “Wayne’s World” which airs on April 22 and 25. Finally, “The Notebook” closes out the month on April 29 and May 2. You can catch Flashback Cinema screenings as Chapel Hill at Silverspot as well as Park West 14 in Morrisville, and Wakefield 12 in Raleigh.

Fathom Events shows retro goodies in select theatres. “Grease” airs on April 8, 11, and 14. Then, “Labryinth” plays on April 29, May 1, and May 2.

Ambassador Cinemas hosts its Monday at the Movies series each third Monday of the month. Revisit sci-fi classic “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” on April 16. At the Cary Theater, tune into “Super Fuzz” on April 18.

In Ralegh, the NC Art Museum features a film series. On April 13, watch “Passport to Pimlico,” followed by “Bend it Like Beckham” on April 20.
