Triangle area classic cinema guide: May 2018 edition

May 2018 might feature highly-anticipated blockbusters such as “Solo: A Star Wars Story.” However, for classic cinema buffs, the Triangle area of NC brings another batch of retro goodies to box offices. Learn what’s coming up with the Triangle area classic cinema guide: May 2018 edition. In Durham at the Carolina Theatre, catch a high-soaring round of martial arts films with the Shaw Brothers: Volume One. Running Monday, April 30-Thursday, May 3 2018, catch “Five Deadly Venoms,” “The Duel,” “The Eight Diagram Pole Fighter,” “Human Lanterns,” “36th Chamber of Shaolin,” “Mighty Peking Man,” “The Boxer’s Omen,” “Crippled Avengers,” “Buddha’s Palm,” and “Black Magic 2.”

In addition to its special Shaw Brothers fest, Carolina Theatre of Durham hosts old school goodies on Friday evenings, part of its Retro Film Series. Catch “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” paired with “A Fish Called Wanda” on Friday, May 4. On Friday May 11, tune in for “Better Off Dead” and “Joe Versus the Volcano.” Saturday May 12 through Thursday May 17, be sure to catch special screenings of “The Changeling.” Then, on Friday May 18, “Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance” slices its way onto the big screen alongside “Revenge of the Ninja.”

At Alamo Drafthouse in Raleigh, specialty screenings air regularly. Running Tuesday May 1 to Thursday, May 3 there’s a 4K restoration of Dario Argento classic “Suspiria.” Tuesday May 8, tune in for a showing of “Bad Boys II,” followed by a Weird Wednesday airing of “Eraserhead,” on may 9, and “Blade Runner: The Final Cut” on May 11. While you’re there, be sure to check out video rental store/bar combo Video Vortex.

Flashback Cinema features retro flicks back at the box office. You can catch Flashback Cinema screenings as Chapel Hill at Silverspot as well as Park West 14 in Morrisville, and Wakefield 12 in Raleigh. “The Notebook” plays on May 2, with “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” on May 6 and 9. Then, “The Sound of Music” plays on May 13 and 16, which could be a solid Mother’s Day outing. 90s cult comedy “Clueless” hits the big screen on May 20 and 23, with a 4K restoration of “Grease” on May 27 and 30.

Fathom Events airs 1986 hit “Labyrinth” on May 1 and May 2. Then, renowned “Sunset Boulevard” plays May 13 and 16.

Ambassador Cinemas hosts “Dazed and Confused” on May 21 for its Monday at the Movies series. At the Cary Theatre, hit up “The Mercenary,” a Spaghetti Western starring Franco Nero, Tony Musante, Giovanna Ralli, and Jack Palance on Wednesday May 16 for Cinema Overdrive.

Make it a movie night at the museum at the North Carolina Museum of Art. “The Love Punch” plays on Friday, May 8. Find “Lost in Paris” on May 11.

With warmer weather hitting, the Lumina in Chapel Hill brings back its Movies by Moonlight series. On May 19, Marvel hit “Black Panther” screens, followed by “Jumanji” on May 26.
